Academic History
The University of Michigan was originally founded in 1817 in Detroit as the Catholepistemiad, or University of Michigania by the governor and judges of the Michigan Territory, as Michigan was not yet a state. 20 years later the campus was moved to its current Ann Arbor location. The motto of the University is artes, scientia, veritas, which is latin for arts, science, truth.
